People in Gokayama villages reside in Gassho-style (prayer hands style) thatched-roof houses even today, some built nearly 350 years ago. Ainokura and Suganuma village are registered as world heritage and some of which even offer accomodations.
Founded in the early 17th century, this magnificent, vast temple is truly awe-inspiring. The front gate, Buddhist hall and lecture hall are arranged in line in the center and other buildings are arranged symmetrically. 20 years were spent constructing this temple for Lord Maeda Toshinaga, who developed the town of Takaoka.
Various artworks and world-famous paintings from artists such as Picasso as well as posters and famous designer chairs are on exhibit. You can see the Tateyama mountain range from the rooftop garden, which has play equipment that can be enjoyed by families, using all five senses.
Cruising along the Shogawa River is a good way to enjoy the beautiful scenery offered by each season. The seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves are beautiful, creating enchanting landscapes for the pleasure boat passengers. In winter, you can see the beautiful contrast between snow and the blue sky.
The Fudomyo-o statue is directly carved into the rock. It is very impressive and appears godlike. Training in waterfalls and Buddhist sutra copying can be experienced.
